FAR AWAY EDUCATION STUDY UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE MALAYSIA

FAR AWAY EDUCATION STUDY UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE MALAYSIA

INTRODUCTION

The distance learning program was started by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 1971 as an Off-Campus Study Plan. It is the foremost and oldest study plan in Malaysia that offers university-level studies at a distance. Beginning in 1994, this plan was officially known as the Distance Learning Plan (RPJJ). RPJJ USM is operated specifically by the School of Distance Education (PPPJJ) USM. Currently, PPPJJ has about 85 academic staff, of which 95% have PhD qualifications. In addition, there are about 25 part-time lecturers who are also involved in conducting courses for each academic conference. PPPJJ also has around 52 administrative and full-time support staff who assist in the implementation of this distance learning plan. RPJJ USM uses a blended learning approach that takes into account the effectiveness of pedagogy and cost effectiveness as well as taking into account the current development of information and communication technology (ICT). Teaching materials are distributed to students in various formats while the teaching and learning process is held in various approaches either face to face (face to face) or using ICT intermediaries.

OBJECTIVES

RPJJ is offered by USM to fulfill some of the following objectives: to enable students who previously did not have the opportunity to continue their higher education for certain reasons, pursue higher education that enables them to obtain a degree. to bring higher education efforts to economically less developed areas and to rural areas. to increase the production rate of trained labor. to produce sufficient professional labor to meet the vision of the country. to develop the productivity of those who already have jobs by updating their knowledge and skills. to enhance the provision of professional, dedicated and innovative manpower resources to meet the vision of the country.

Students have to choose one field of specialization (major) and one field of minor during the period of study. As RPJJ USM provides part-time university-level study opportunities to students who already have jobs, the period of study is set for a minimum of 5 years and a maximum of 12 years.
